The combination square was invented in 1878 and has been copied countless times over the last 140+ years. But until now, no one has done much to make the combination square better. Woodpeckers product development team wanted more than just a “me too” product. They built features into our in-DEXABLE Combination Squares you won’t find in any other combination square at any price. Features like laser-accurate scribing guides, positive indexing at every full inch, a sliding head support and accurate, laser-engraved scales. The “XL” models of the Combination and Double Square fit the same blades as our standard-sized in-DEXABLE but give you longer and deeper reference surfaces. They’re available with blades or without (if you already have a collection of in-DEXABLE blades).
Two features stand out when you compare Woodpeckers -DEXABLES with any other combination square. First, you’ll notice the scribing guides laser-cut on 1/16" centers. They’re sized and shaped to guide any marking device perfectly parallel to the edge of your stock. To give the scribing guides an accurate starting point, the round holes in the center of the blade index the heads to the closest full inch. The scales are laser-engraved to an accuracy of ±.004" with 1/16" graduations on one edge and 1/32" on the other. The blades are available in 6", 12" and 18" lengths, all of which fit six different heads in our -DEXABLE system…the standard Combination Head, standard Double Square Head, XL Combination Head, XL Double Square Head, Protractor Head and Centering Head. If you prefer working in metric, there are metric versions with 1mm graduations and heads that lock every 30mm.
90° and 45°. Everything you build involves one or both of these angles over and over again. The genius of the combination square is having both of them in your hand, all the time. Woodpeckers adds new features and larger references to the classic combination square design in -DEXABLE XL model. There’s a tab that slides out of the head and supports it flush with the surface of your material. The head is a full inch thick, which gives you a depth of just under 1/2"…more than enough to reach past most molded edges. The XL head also has a full 5" reference surface. You can get the XL Combination Square with an 18" blade or get the head by itself, if you already have -DEXABLE blades.
The XL Double Square is just as thick and just as long as the Combination head, but without the 45° edge, it’s a bit more compact, making it more convenient when you know you’re not dealing with miters. Like the Combination head, it has the sliding tab for edge support and the indexing feature. It comes standard with a 12" blade and is also available as a head only.
With blade or without, both the XL Combination and Double Square include a wall-mountable Rack-It to keep your square protected, but still always in plain sight. Like all Woodpeckers products, the in-DEXABLE XL Combination Squares and XL Double Squares are precisely machined and carefully inspected in Strongsville, Ohio factory (just south of Cleveland).
