Measuring the narrow edge of stock with typical rules is a little awkward. Getting the rule parallel to the stock and leaving yourself room to make a tic mark can become quite a juggling act. Working on the face of a piece is usually a little easier, but you can still struggle to keep the rule parallel to your work. Woodpeckers Woodworkers Edge Rule simplifies your life by wrapping around the edge of your stock and giving you an accurate scale on both sides. The short side is just 3/8” wide, giving you plenty of room to mark stock as thin as 7/16”. The long side reaches 3/4” across the face of your piece. Whether you're working on the edge or the face, the corner of the Edge Rule always keeps you properly aligned.
Woodpeckers Woodworkers Edge Rule
Here are Just a Few of the Edge Rule’s Tricks
Measurements from Inside Corners Hardware installation usually calls for a measurement referenced from an intersecting cross-member…like the rails and stiles of a cabinet face frame. The Edge Rule drops in perfectly zeroed out to the intersection and aligned to the stock.
Marking Edge and Face at the Same Dimension Place the desired dimension at the end of your board and mark at the end of your Edge Rule on both the face and edge. Use the optional Edge Rule Stop to accurately and easily repeat that setting as many times as needed.
Finding Center of Nominal Stock Whether your stock is a hair over 3/4" or a hair under 3/4", you can find the center by making two marks using the 3/8" side of your Edge Rule. The same is true for “two-by” construction material that is pretty close to 1-1/2"…use opposing lines marked with the 3/4" side of the Edge Rule to find the exact center.
Mid-Field Measurements Even when you're not working at the edge of your stock, you'll still find the Edge Rule handy. The profiled shape makes it easier to move around on your stock than a thin, flat rule and the beveled edges get the scale right next to your stock where you need it.
The angle inside the Edge Rule is 89 °. This slightly acute angle puts the contact between your workpiece and the Edge Rule at the outside edges which means slight deviations in your workpiece edge won't throw off your measurement. Both edges are beveled, putting the scale right next to your work, which simplifies marking and minimizes parallax error. The Edge Rules are anodized for surface protection and to give them our familiar “Woodpeckers Red” color. The 1/32" graduated scale is laser engraved to an accuracy of ± .004” total accumulated error over the entire length.
Edge Rule Stops make a great rule even easier to use for repetitive marking. The stop fits the Edge Rule like a glove. Slide it to your desired measurement, lock it, and mark at the end of the rule. You’ll get exactly the same measurement no matter how many pieces you need.
Keep your Edge Rules stored conveniently right where you need them with the Edge Rule Rack-It™. The powder-coated Rack-It™ mounts anywhere and holds 4 Edge Rules and Edge Rule Stops.
