The combination square was invented in 1878 and has been copied countless times over the last 140+ years. But until now, no one has done much to make the combination square better. Woodpeckers product development team wanted more than just a “me too” product. They built features into our in-DEXABLE Combination Squares you won’t find in any other combination square at any price. Features like laser-accurate scribing guides, positive indexing at every full inch, a sliding head support and accurate, laser-engraved scales. To round out the system there’s a Double Square head and we’ve recently added a new Centering Head and a new Protractor Head, all with the same precise full-inch indexing feature.
Thoughtful Design and a Systematic Approach
Two features stand out when you compare Woodpeckers in-DEXABLES with any other combination square. First, you’ll notice the scribing guides laser-cut on 1/16" centers. They’re sized and shaped to guide any marking device perfectly parallel to the edge of your stock. To give the scribing guides an accurate starting point, the round holes in the center of the blade index the heads to the closest full inch. The scales are laser-engraved to an accuracy of ±.004" with 1/16" graduations on one edge and 1/32" on the other. The blades are available in 6", 12" and 18" lengths, all of which fit all four heads, as well as the XL Combination and XL Double Square heads. If you prefer working in metric, there are metric versions with 1mm graduations and heads that lock every 30mm.
Combination Square Head: Woodworking’s Two Most Important Angles
90° and 45°. Everything you build involves one or both of these angles over and over again. The genius of the combination square is having both of them in your hand, all the time. Woodpeckers adds a new feature to the classic design with a sliding tab that supports the head while it’s hanging off the edge of your work.
Double Square Head: Square Inside, Outside, Right or Left
The Double Square head is a bit more compact than the Combination Square head and more convenient when you know you’re not dealing with miters. It also has the sliding tab for edge support.Protractor Head: Laser-Engraved Scale for All Angles and Positive Stops for Standards
When your projects get a bit more complicated, and call for angles other than 45°, the new in-DEXABLE Protractor head will be a welcome addition to your shop. The smooth-turning protractor can be adjusted to any angle between 0° and 90° both right and left. There’s an alignment pin that indexes to the edge of the blade for fast, accurate registration of standard angles (22.5°, 45°, 67.5° and 90°). All other angles are easily set to the high-contrast laser-engraved scale. Two large locking knobs and an 8" long reference edge give you confidence in your angle layout. When you’re working straight and square, the Protractor is still a welcome partner in your shop. When locked square, it’s a handy T-square with built-in scribing guides.
Centering Head: Find the Center of any Round or Square Stock
The Centering Head holds the blade at a 45° angle relative to machined 90° surfaces. Marking the two diagonals of a square locates center. It’s even easier to find the center of a circle…just hold the Centering Head against the circle in any two different spots and strike a line across the diameter. The intersection is the dead-center of your circle. Opposite the 90° centering guides, the back side of the Centering Head locks in with the indexing feature so you can scribe without changing heads.
Standard Selections and the Complete Set
The standard versions of the Center Finder and the Double Square come with 6" blades. The standard Combination Square comes with a 12" blade. The standard Protractor comes with an 18" blade. The Complete Combination Square Set includes all 4 heads, all 3 blades and wall-mountable Rack-Its that keep the heads (with or without a blade) right in plain sight and ready for work.
